Maybe you have heard it too? “Decaf is for psychopaths.”or “Decaf?? No way, I choose the real deal.”
Well if you have ever typed “Can caffeine cause anxiety?” into the search bar or been told by your doctor that you need to cut your caffeine intake. Then you too may have found yourself searching for a delicious cup of decaf coffee that holds up to your beloved coffee ritual.
At Larry’s Coffee decaf is not a compromise or a downgrade, it’s crafted with care for the “psychopaths” who we like to consider the “top tier” coffee drinkers. The decaf coffee drinkers are in it for more than the caffeine jolt, they are in it for the flavor.
What is Decaf Coffee?
Decaf coffee has gone through a process to remove the caffeine from the coffee bean. At Larry’s our beans have been through a chemical free process called “Mountain Water Processing.” During this water process the water flows through the beans, extracting caffeine, which is then filtered out using activated charcoal. This leaves the flavor and our organic certification itact.
Does decaf coffee have caffeine?
Mountain water processed decaf is 99.9% caffeine free. That means on average around 2-3 mg per cup of coffee, compared to 70-140mg in regular coffee.
Why do people drink decaf?
There reasons for drinking decaf are as diverse as the people drinking it. Here are some reasons why folks reach for decaf:
- Reduce anxiety
- Trouble sleeping
- Are sensitive to caffeine
- Want a second (or fourth) cup without overdoing it on caffeine
- Medical conditions - heart palpitations, acid reflux, pregnant, etc
- Want an after dinner drink without the jolt
- Dessert!
Whatever the reason always make sure to consult your healthcare professionals to ensure decaf is right for you.
Decaf a Love Story: Part 1 The Table
For me the love of decaf comes from sitting around the dinner table. Lingering after a meal with family and friends. Talking and laughing over the empty plates. Crumpled napkins and crumbs litter the table. Someone stands, eyes rolling at the joke they have heard their spouse retell a thousand times and moves the stacked dishes to the sink. When they return it’s with a small stack of plates and a familiar humble cake with one sliver already taken out for quality control. “I put on a pot of decaf” they say as the cake is cut and passed around the table. And there is something loving about the offering of decaf at this hour. It says- we are not rushing out, we are staying for a little while longer.
