The Short Answer: We roast every single bean right here in Raleigh, North Carolina. Specifically at our dedicated sustainable facility in the Five Points neighborhood (1507 Gavin Street, to be exact). We roast every day, Monday through Friday. This means if you live in the Triangle, your beans were likely spinning in our drum less than 48 hours before they landed on your doorstep.
Larry’s Take: The "Food Miles" of Coffee
We believe coffee should travel thousands of miles before it gets roasted (from the farm to us), but only a few miles after it gets roasted (from us to you).
Why? Because roasted coffee is fresh produce.
Big national brands roast their coffee in massive factories, warehouse it for months, and then truck it across the country. By the time you buy it, it’s tired. At Gavin Street, we roast in small batches daily. Our subscription orders are often packed while the beans are still warm. That’s the "Local Advantage." We here from our neighbors all the time that they love the smell when we're roasting and can smell the rich toasty aroma from a block away.
Inside the "Green" Roastery
Our facility isn't just a factory; it’s a science experiment in sustainability. We built it to be as clean as the coffee we roast.
-
Passive Solar Design: We use massive clerestory windows and thermal mass floors to heat and cool the building naturally, reducing our energy footprint.
-
Rainwater Harvesting: We collect rainwater from our roof to water the native plants and flush our toilets.1 We try not to waste a drop.
-
Biodiesel Delivery: If you see our van zooming around Raleigh delivering fresh kegs of Cold Brew or bags of [LINK: Cowboy Blend], know that it’s running on recycled vegetable oil.
From Gavin Street to Your Porch
Because we are local, our logistics are simple: Roast -> Pack -> Ship.
-
For Locals (Raleigh/Durham): If you subscribe to Larry's House your coffee barely spends any time in transit. It’s the freshest cup you can get without working here.
-
For the "Lazy Local": You don't have to fight traffic on Wade Ave to get fresh beans. Our Subscription service is basically a "Freshness Automator." You set the schedule, and we roast to order.
-
Where to Visit: While we are primarily a working roastery (lots of forklifts!), you can stop by Monday through Friday from 9am to 530pm and Saturday 9am to 12pm for any of our whole bean varieties. We always have a few drip coffees ready to serve too! You can also find our fresh roasts at our partner cafes like 42 & Lawrence downtown.
The Verdict from Five Points
"Local" isn't just a marketing word; it’s a flavor profile.
Coffee that was roasted yesterday in Raleigh tastes sweeter, brighter, and more alive than coffee that was roasted six months ago in Seattle. Come by Gavin Street, take a deep breath, and smell the difference.
