Larry’s Coffee Sustains Business By Harvesting Rainwater

WHY EARTH DAY IS IMPORTANT FOR LARRY’S COFFEE CREW

Earth Day is the perfect day to reflect and ensure we are doing all we can for the betterment of our community, our friends, our family, and our planet.  Our impact goes far beyond the coffees we source and roast, and it’s why we emphasize ‘doing good’ and ‘doing better’ in every area of Larry’s Coffee.

HARVESTING RAINWATER AT LARRY’S COFFEE

The culture at Larry’s Coffee is to lead by example in hopes it sparks caring conversations that inspire others to do more and be a force for good. Much of that inspiration can be found at our coffee roastery in Raleigh, North Carolina.

With about 46 inches of rainfall each year and an average of 4 inches of snow in the Raleigh area, Larry’s Coffee started collecting small amounts of runoff water for use throughout the gardens. Keeping on our mission to prove business can be a force for good, Larry’s Coffee took rainwater collection a few steps forward with the addition of larger tanks.

Today on the property of Larry’s Coffee sits four 2500-gallon tanks that do more than collect rainwater. The larger tanks help capture valuable plant nutrients, nitrogen and phosphorus, that contribute to the irrigation waters used throughout the landscape and garden areas.

RAINWATER COLLECTION - MORE THAN SAVING MONEY

While Collecting rainwater does help to save money on utility costs, for Larry’s Coffee, there’s much more to it than that.  Harvesting rainwater improves the environment and can even help dilute salt buildup that naturally occurs in our soil. For Larry’s Coffe, harvesting rainwater reduces the waste of drinking water and is specifically for landscape irrigation. Taking our love for the planet a little further, we also set up a rainwater collection system that runs the restrooms at the coffee roastery.

OTHER KIND WAYS LARRY’S COFFEE PROTECTS OUR PLANET EARTH

Embracing the environment with love extends far beyond the brews at Larry’s Coffee. From using solar panels on the roof that heats the floors in the winter, reusing whisky barrels into a beehive, and offering locals a plant-based biodiesel filling station, Larry’s Coffee is on its journey to a greener, more sustainable environment.

Larry’s Coffee stands out for only sourcing 100% organic, fair-trade, and shade-grown coffee from small independent farmers. As a certified B-Corporation, Larry’s Coffee models the role of business as a source of good in the world.  The company is also a founding member of Cooperative Coffees, a group of independent coffee roasters importing coffee directly from farmers to define a higher standard of partnership and fairness. We aim to make choices with consequences that are good for our local community, our animal friends, and the planet at large. Larry’s Coffee believes in leading by doing and being part of a global movement that aims to make businesses a powerful force for good.
