To War

By Fred Appelhanz

       To War

Tell me you love me,

speak, momma dear.

I depart to war,

tell me loud and clear.

I may not return,

solemnly, we march on.

Pockets hide notes of strength,

words, I now draw upon.

We received a send-off,

fain bravado while reminiscing.

Promises sincerely extended,

spouses wave good-bye, crying.

To killing fields I go,

loving warnings resonate.

Old warriors sing songs,

new soldiers whimper, hesitate.

As I begrudgingly advance,

within this mob of men.

Blood flows indiscriminate.

Death’s arms extended and open.
