Fall

By Fred Appelhanz

`             Fall

Wisps of summer’s heat

dance in my mind’s memory

like waves rising

upon a faraway horizon.

Colors trickle down,

in cascades of fall’s ritual.

Whispers of an eternal message

are triggered by my walking.

Senses explode in unison;

sights and smells overflow.

Another year wanes

and geese fly overhead.

Bewitching are the changes

delivered by nature’s will.

Wildlife make their preparations.

Humans pay scant attention.

Just as fall will pass and

winter will dominate us,

I absorb all that I can,

clutching these moments-

tenderly.
