By Duane L Herrmann
Bones in the meadow lie

after the fire to burn dead grass.
It was a cow, the skull says,
the lost one – missing
some time last summer
and just now found.
The farmer paused…
This cow…
Was she the stubborn one?
Or, the one who ran away?
she did not like the herd,
or, did the herd
reject her?
It’s over now,
the life, the missing.
What do we do now
with the bones?
