Countless Strangers Passing

By Duane L Herrmann
This farm I see distantly

from the highway
slicing through fields –
what did the farmer feel
when he learned,
one day long ago,
this road
would cut through
his family land?
He had no choice
but submit
to powers greater
than his own –
and precious fields,
dismembered, graded, paved,
for convenience
of countless strangers passing
through his pain.
